Winner, Best of Asia Award for Classical Singing (ICMA 2024)
Representing Sri Lanka for the Asian Continent in the Classical Singing category at the 11th InterContinental Music Awards (ICMA) 2024 featuring contestants from all 5 continents, Dr. Kanchanamala Ranasinghe came 1st in her continent category, bagging the award for "Best in Asia" at the competition held in Los Angeles.
Taking Sri Lankan classical music to the global stage and simultaneously becoming the first Sri Lankan to achieve such a triumph in the Asian Continent, the panel of judges consisted of Grammy Award winners and professors in music in California as well as Hollywood artistes, who work closely with Grammy Award Winners.
The panel of Judges who adjudicated the Sri Lankan as the winner, included song-producers for many award winning films including Top Gun, Santa Barbara and Redline and closely collaborated with Warner Brothers, MTV, Netflix, Sony and Cinemax.
The heart touching music for Dr. Kanchanamala’s song ‘Pathiniyak Wee’ was created by Maestro Nalaka Anjana Kumara and penned by Jayamali Charitha Bandara.
Kanchanamala is a multi-potentiality individual with many interests and creative pursuits. She is highly qualified in the medical field and has numerous specialist fellowships possessing a degree as a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical medicine as MBBS, FRACGP- RG, FARGP (Emergency Medicine), FACRRM, EMC (ACEM), CWH (RANZCOG), ESME (AMEE), M.Phil., PhD (UQ).
She is the daughter of parents Terence and Malini Ranasinghe, who hold the Guinness Record for most number of theatre performances for 31 years continuously. Kanchanamala graduated from the faculty of Medicine at Peradeniya and is currently working as a Specialist General Practitioner in Australia. She holds 3 specialist fellowships as well as a PhD and also serves the School of Medicine at Griffith University, Australia as a senior lecturer.
